The AN/GRC-245 is available in several variants.
AN/GRC-245 SCA HCLOS™ band 1 and 3+
AN/GRC-245 High Power radio
AN/GRC-245 SCA HCLOS™ Band 4
AN/GRC-245 HCLOS™ is a multi-band multi-mode, software defined radio that allows the operating frequency and waveform to be selected to meet the widely diverse operational requirements.
The radio operates in the 225-400 MHz and 1350-2690 MHz range using a shelter installed or the base of the mast Radio Frequency Unit ( RFU )and 4400 - 5000 MHz using a mast mounted RFU. One of the key features of the radio is its long range and its spectrum efficiency. The spectrum efficiency allows more radios to be used in the same frequency band and this is very advantageous as spectrum is becoming more and more crowded with the deployment of new systems or when military operations are conducted with many international participants each requiring access to the same spectrum. The AN/GRC-245 is one of the most spectrum efficient radios available today with its 3.3 b/Hz efficiency.
The 34Mb/s full duplex version of the radio uses the Software Communications architecture (SCA) that was developed by a consortium of U.S Defence contractors under the sponsorship of the Joint Tactical Radio system (JTRS) joint project office and the Canadian Communications Research Center. The objective of SCA is to provide an open standard to standardize the internal architecture of software defined radios. It is particularly well suited where multiple processors are involved. This standardization facilitates future flexibility and growth for the product by making it easier to add new waveforms and features. The radio currently supports as an operator selectable feature the following waveforms: DPSK
32 TCM at rates between 256 kb/s to 34 Mb/s
Binary FM at rates up to 2048kb/s
Optionally OQPSK for On The Move (OTM) operation
The radio has the option of a built in multiplexer that supports two serial traffic groups and an Ethernet LAN. The provision of a direct LAN interface makes the radio ideal for use in IP based area communications systems.
A high power version of the AN/GRC-245 is available for special applications such as for use in air defence systems. This radio has a maximum throughput of 8192 kb/s.
